Arts & Culture & Recreation
Cultural opportunities abound for residents to enjoy and participate in the fine arts in the area...whether watching the filming of a motion picture or enjoying a world renowned violinist. Covington has even been referred to as "Hollywood South" because of the television shows, motion pictures, and made-for-tv movies that have been filmed in our community. Visitors frequent the community searching for Sparta, the fictional town from "In the Heat of the Night." Some stroll through the beautifully restored ante-bellum homes and gardens during seasonal tours, visit our wildlife centers or tour a winery.
The Arts Association of Newton County brings world renowned artists and productions to Covington, and offers programs for the youth in our community including voice lessons and the Strings Program. The Choral Guild and the Community Band are excellent opportunities for those that are musically gifted to share their talents. Oxford College students host several productions throughout the year at the Tarbutton Performing Arts Center, on campus, as well as other programs for the public. For those seeking outdoor adventure, there is the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center or the Georgia Wildlife Federation. Both of these facilities offer educational programs for the residents of Newton County. In addition to these activities, Newton County has houses of worship for twenty denominations of faith and numerous civic clubs. A nationally known local recreation department offers children, youth & adult opportunities, as well as a local YMCA with state-of-the-art facilities and swimming pool.
